Thanks for having your say on cycling and walking investment

Two cyclists riding down a path in a parkWe'd like to thank all those who took part in an initial consultation on ways to improve cycling and walking routes in Dacorum.

Your comments will help us to identify walking and cycling routes of most importance to the community over the next 10 years. Funding will be sought from central Government and other sources to make improvements to these routes. Potential future enhancements include new or improved crossings, footway improvements, junction upgrades and traffic-calming measures.

The consultation on the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) was open for four weeks, closing on 26 February 2024.

The LCWIP, which is being compiled by Hertfordshire County Council in partnership with ourselves, aims to make walking and cycling more attractive and viable options than using a car, for shorter journeys or as part of longer trips.

We are now reviewing your feedback while drawing up the final draft LCWIP. You will have the opportunity to comment on this later this year when a further public consultation is held.

Cllr Adrian England, our Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “Cycling and walking - and using a mobility scooter - are alternatives which are essential now, because we may still be able to add cars to the open road, but our residential streets are choc-full of parked cars. We need to preserve the convenience of cars by thinking of them as one of several movement options which can be differently valid, or suited to the circumstances.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to respond as part of this initial consultation. This is about putting the right plan in place for local infrastructure so that, firstly, more trips can be made by bike, walking or wheeling and, also, that these routes work together seamlessly as parts of one highly effective network to benefit all our residents.

“Tackling climate change is one of our administration’s practical priorities - it’s also about making life feel better for everyone, supporting healthy choices and making the best use of the space we have in Dacorum.”
