Compost giveaway is a hit with residents

Ten tonnes of peat-free compost was shared between more than 300 residents earlier this month as we marked International Compost Awareness Week.

We invited residents to collect free bags of compost - more than 600 bags were given to keen gardeners from across the borough as well as to DENS volunteer gardeners - at Cupid Green Depot, Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 21 May.

The compost, produced from recycled garden waste which was originally collected from homes across Dacorum, was kindly provided by Biogen.

More than 300 packets of bee-friendly wildflower seeds were also given out through the Dacorum Climate Action Network to support our local pollinators and brighten up the borough’s gardens and allotments.

It is important to use peat-free compost as peat production is damaging to the environment, destroying valuable eco-systems and releasing carbon into the atmosphere, which contributes to climate change.

It is easy to recycle your garden waste at home by composting it. A compost bin can also be used to recycle some of your food waste, including tea bags and fruit and vegetable peelings. For more information about home composting, please visit our Home Composting page.

If you wish to recycle garden waste into compost (using your green-lidded bin) for our next giveaway event, you can sign up to our Garden Waste Subscription Service at an annual cost of £45 per bin. To subscribe, please go to our Garden Waste Subscription Service page
