Be Active in Dacorum

With excellent transport links, Hemel Hempstead and the surrounding borough of Dacorum provide a fantastic range of sports facilities for the south-east region. Whether you’re a beginner or reaching for Olympic standard, we’re home to a whole host of clubs and venues that can help you to achieve your fitness goals.

Everyone Active

Boasting eight swimming pools (including a lido), gyms and racket sports courts, our local leisure centres in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted, Longdean Sports Centre and Jarman Park Athletics Track are run by Everyone Active. These venues provide amazing facilities for you to enjoy and are home to a huge number of sports clubs, from scuba diving to trampolining.

It’s also the main base for Sapphire Gymnastics, where double Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Max Whitlock started his career.

Meanwhile, at the athletics track, you’ll find an eight-lane, 400-metre floodlit track plus a full-sized football pitch, clubroom, shower and toilet facilities.

Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, Hemel Hempstead provides a challenging terrain for ambitious cyclists and has hosted both the Tour of Britain (2014 and 2017) and the Women's Tour (2015).

The Dacorum Cycle Hub opened in 2017 and is the perfect place to take a rest, meet like-minded cyclists, have a cup of tea or get your bike serviced. Free guided rides operate on weekends and Bikeability courses are also run from the Hub. The nearby Nickey Line provides a great route for families and cycling groups.

Extreme sports

If you're into extreme sports, The XC is home to an impressive skate park, a 14-metre high climbing wall, one of the world's largest organic indoor caving systems and a challenging high ropes course.

You’ll find London’s closest real snow slope in Hemel Hempstead at The Snow Centre. With a huge 160-metre main slope, as well as the largest indoor ski lesson slope in the UK, it's perfect for all your indoor skiing and snowboarding needs!

And ice skating fans are well catered for at Planet Ice skating rink at Jarman Square, which is also used as a practice rink for ITV show Dancing on Ice.

With a mild climate, Hemel Hempstead is a great place to get out for a round of golf. And there are a range of venues for you to test your skills. Little Hay Golf Complex in Bovingdon boasts an 18-hole course and driving range, and offers tuition for adults and children. And despite only opening in 2013, The Centurion Club near Leverstock Green has already hosted a European Tour event - the GolfSixes tournament.

Get set, go Dacorum

Get set, go Dacorum was a £250,000 Sport England-funded project to help more local people get fit and stay active across Dacorum. It ran from 2014 until 2017. We are currently looking at other funding opportunities to support even more people to take up sport and physical activity in the area.
