Council chief steps down

Sally Marshall

Our Chief Executive, Sally Marshall, has announced that she will retire from her post after over 30 years of local government service.

Sally originally joined Dacorum Borough Council in 2008 to take up the role of Corporate Director (Finance and Governance). In November 2013 Sally became our first female Chief Executive, and she has led the Council through a decade of unprecedented change.

Sally said: “I have been extremely fortunate to be able to develop a career in local government over the past 34 years, which has been fulfilling and satisfying.

“Since losing my husband suddenly I have taken time to reappraise my life and I have decided now is the time for a change in lifestyle. I’m interested in pursuing interests that I have not been able to do whilst working full time. I hope to dedicate more time to voluntary and charitable work, spend time with my parents and broader family, develop a healthy lifestyle and find time to travel.

“It has been a great privilege working with my colleagues here at DBC, and an honour to serve the community. I will miss colleagues but am very much looking forward to a new chapter."

Speaking about the highlights of her career at Dacorum, Sally identified working with members to establish a strong and robust financial and governance base for the Council following the 2008 world financial crisis and recession, whilst also creating the financial capacity to deliver our ambitious regeneration plans for the borough, as Director of Finance. Becoming Chief Executive and being able to work with the Leader of the Council, members and staff to then deliver the £30 million Council-funded regeneration programme for Dacorum, and using this catalyst to establish a strong relationship with the business community to attract inward investment to the borough.

Cllr Andrew Williams, Leader of the Council, said: “I have worked closely with Sally since 2008. Sally has a vast amount of knowledge and experience and has been a tremendous asset to the Council and its communities throughout her tenure.

“I wish Sally well in her retirement. On behalf of the Council, all councillors, staff and the people of the borough I would like to place on record our gratitude to Sally for what has been a remarkable 12 years in Dacorum."

The recruitment process for a new Chief Executive will start shortly.
