Free compost giveaway to Dacorum residents

Free Compost is being given away

To celebrate International Compost Awareness Week (6-12 May), we’re giving away free compost to residents to use on their gardens.

Anyone who lives in Dacorum can come to Cupid Green Depot, Redbourn Road, Hemel Hempstead, HP2 7BA, on Sunday 13 May between 9am and 11am to pick up a free bag of compost. The compost will be pre-bagged and strictly limited to two bags per vehicle. The compost will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis – so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Last year, by putting grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, flowers and weeds into their green-lidded bins, Dacorum’s residents diverted over 10,000 tonnes of garden waste from landfill so that it could be recycled into compost instead. D Williams and Co is the company responsible for converting the contents of the green-lidded bin into this nutrient-rich compost, which will be on offer at the giveaway.

Compost has a range of benefits, such as improving soil quality, growing healthy plants, reducing the use of fertiliser and pesticides and is even an effective method of reducing harmful greenhouse gases.

Portfolio Holder for Environment Sustainability and Regulatory Services, Councillor Janice Marshall, said “Our annual Compost Giveaway is a fantastic opportunity to show the value of recycling in your kerbside bins. I hope that our green-fingered residents take the chance to see what their garden waste gets turned into, and enjoy taking this nutrient-rich compost home to reuse on their own gardens to help grow strong, healthy plants and vegetables.”
